Flashback. We are in the last levels of play of Day 1E, Marino Valerio from Cut Off pins two Aces and decides to play them in trapping, after the opening of a very closed player.
The Big Dark opts for a squeeze, the original raiser folds, and Marino, consistent with his line, simply calls. The flop reads 10ā„ļø 9ā£ļø 8ā„ļø the squeezer bets 1/3 of the pot, call. The turn is a 4ā ļø, his opponent has about a pot-size bet and goes all-in.
Marino calls and has to face a Pair of Nines (or better, a flopped set). His hopes of staying in the tournament are hanging by a thread, there are only two more Aces in the deck (at least in theory, not knowing what the other players folded preflop), which, translated into numbers, is roughly equal to a 4 percent chance of winning.
Marino Valerio
Flashforward. We are on Day 2 B, Marino is sitting in seat 7 with a huge amount of chips. He writes the highest number on the envelope compared to everyone else left in the game (including the qualifiers from Day 2 A). That Ace, in the end, came out for real.
If we happened to be in one of the other 24 parallel universes we would be telling you a different story, but in the one from which we are writing to you the good Marino not only managed to close Day1 as chip leader, but on Day2 he even managed to quintuple his stack by exceeding 2.5 million. How? We let him tell us:
"Tough redraw with 4/5 reg, which is why in the first three levels I remained very cautious preserving the stack. The first double-up came with Kā ļø Kā¦ļø in a spot where BB defends with Qā ļø 9ā„ļø my opening from UTG, on the flop he cashes 9-8-3 with two Spades and we end up all-in.
Then I switched tables and I have to admit that I ran fairly well, saw a lot of cards, and, also thanks to my stack, managed to win several uncontested pots in the bubble phase. The biggest pot I won with A-K suited on my 4-bet: he dropped J-10-9 with two Hearts with his opponent having flatted the 4-bet with Q-10 from BTN. Turn Qā„ļø...From there on a few more uncontested pots and here I am!"
The tournament
It started at 5:30 p.m. with a half-hour delay compared to the time indicated in the schedule, as the morning flight speed ended precisely at 5:00 p.m. Thanks to the 71 entries (with 24 qualifiers) the entry count reached 840, generating a ā¬259,450 prize pool bestowed in this way:
ā¬196,000 constituted the tournament prize money
15,000ā¬ was awarded as the chip leader prize on Days 1B and C.
35,000ā¬ is allocated to the top 3 Teams (20K to 1st, 10K to 2nd, and 5K to 3rd)
12,950ā¬ will be awarded to the top 37 finishers in the form of 350ā¬ tickets to the next Grand Final
The action lasted until about 2:30 a.m., with a rather long bubble phase that saw the survivors engaged for a full two hours from 50 left to 47, the time of the bubble burst as well as the closing of the Day.
The Top 5
Marino Valerio (team "#Tuttoacaso"), as mentioned in the opening, leads the ranks with 2,510,000 chips, followed by the Day1 A chip leader, Adrian Lovin Sorin, at 2,409,000. In the third position, however, we find the chip leader at the beginning of the Day, Davide Clodomiro with 2,271,000.
Given the huge stack to be administered, the Calabrian player could afford to wait for the right spot, which came in the form of a preflop cooler against Davide Nutarelli: Aces for Davide, A-K for the DJ, who abandons the tournament a few steps away from the bubble.
Fourth place for Gabriele Farris (Sardinia Poker Team), with 2,249,000, while in fifth place there is room for the man who is not afraid to call himself the greatest player in the world, the very nice Niki Prela at 1,884,000.
Continuing in the ranking including Day2 A and B obviously, we find several well-known names in the Eurorounders circuit and not only, starting with number 11, Alessandro Scermino (1,226,000) and continuing with the chip leader at Day1F Corrado Luigi (22nd at 928. 000), Romano Ravaioli (37th at 554,000), Davide Cojaniz (39th 496,000), Lorenzo Acampora (41st at 475,000), Federico Anselmi (49th at 362,000), Maurizio Migliorini (54th at 275,000), Roberto Roberti (56th at 254,000) and Edoardo Fattorini (66th at 133,000).
